Complaints we have received:

Trades Backed Out

  • “I have had (3) profitable trades backed out (but never an unprofitable one); been unable to decipher TD Ameritrade’s intentionally bewildering and conflicting data, reports and statements; and had trades that were not executed.-DN, New York
  • “My experiences with and analysis of TD Ameritrade mirror yours. I have had numerous profitable trades backed out; consistently received inaccurate, misleading, and conflicting reports and data; have had reduced/no control over my account; been unable to execute trades; encountered lies, denials and abuse by their representatives and more.”Jeff – USA
  • “I have over 20 years investment experience. Over the last 3 years I have traded with TD Ameritrade, Charles Schwab, E-trade and Scottrade… As far as TD Ameritrade, you have no control over your account; I have had good trades backed out and I have not been able to execute certain trades… They are making incredible profits and myself and others feel their staff is ether demoralized or in denial” – Walter – Florida

Improper Account Liquidationmarketcrash

  • “TD Ameritrade holds 3 accounts for me 2 IRA accounts and 1 individual account. During the “Flash Crash” of May 6th 2010, they Liquidated my account as part of protecting their interest causing a loss of more than 160K without allowing me to cover the call.” EM, Ohio
  • “We have had serious problems with TD Ameritrade, changing orders, backing out of orders, selling at the wrong price…and the customer services is terrible, we have very little response to all of our emails and almost no help over numerous phone calls.” – CM, New York

FAILURE TO ACKNOWLEDGE PROBLEMS

  • “TD Ameritrade has serious issues with their trading platform. I have had the most amazing issues such as buying from one account, but having the orders placed to another, orders placed outside the time limit they advertise, odd error messages, trading platforms locking up while daytrading. Half the time I get no response to my emails. The rest of the time they say it is my fault. I have sent screenshots to them illustrating the problems and even posted a video to Youtube clearly showing my problem. (It can be found in Youtube by ssearching for TDAmeritrade Problem). I emailed them the link a week ago. Nothing. This company chargees $20 a round trip for trades and I make about 4 a day. You would think that for $1600 a month, they might feel some responsibility to their customers.” – John – Californiae6baae740e0e5c12da0e6a706700b999
  • “I just got off the phone with a TD Ameritrade customer service supervisor and wow was he a jerk…While filling out the application (at a local branch), I came across an alarming statement on the account agreement (“I agree to indemnify and hold harmless TD AMERITRADE (TDA and TD AMERITRADE Clearing, Inc. (TDAC) from any and all liability and claims for damages resulting from any action taken pursuant to this Agreement” – last sentence in #7. Individual Retirement Account Agreement). I found a very similar sentence in the last paragraph of this same section. I called to asked customer service what these sentences meant (it appears to say that I agree not hold TD Ameritrade responsible for any wrong doing related to my account). The first guy could not explain what this sentence was saying. He passed me over to his supervisor. [The supervisor] answers the phone with an attitude and says, “…it is just saying that you agree to the conditions of the account…sign it or don’t, its your choice…” The same section also says that I “Having received and read the Custodial Agreement…” I then asked him where I find this form. His attitude gets worse and he says, “it’s out there somewhere…you should have received it from the agent at the branch…” I did not receive this document and I told him that this is no way to treat a perspective client… All I know is that I feel sorry for anyone that signs this document and later has a problem in there account because according to the account agreement you agree to indemnify (To protect against damage, loss, or injury) and hold harmless TD Ameritrade, TD Ameritrade Clearing, Inc. and TD Ameritrade Inc. from any and all liability and claims for damages resulting from any action taken pursuant (in accordance with) to this Agreement. And if the customer service supervisor treats a new (perspective) client this poorly, I can only imagine how he (they) would treat an existing account holder if they had a problem.” – Sean – Maryland

  1. A Puis says:

TD Ameritrade is a crooked ripoff group of republicans who think that the law do not apply to them. i use to recommend them to friends, no more, they do not give you report on transaction fees so you cannot see their fraudulent fees activities. The politician are backing them because of money, try other platforms, there is lots of better ones out there. e.g interactive brokers etc.

  2. Also Cheated by TD Ameritrade says:

What people say on this site is true. I went through an arbitration process to find that FINRA looked the other way the entire time. It was absolutely unjust. During the process TD Ameritrade turned in fabricated trading records, edited phone calls, deleted all trade records from their website and their expert witness produced falsified reports. Do not do business with them, run away as fast as you can. Your money is not safe there. Be warned.

  3. George says:

We all need to get a class action suit together!!! I had similar issues with them even wrote to the SEC about it. They won’t do anything unless their forced .

  4. adrian says:

Idiots, if you dont know to trade on margin dont cry like babys.
you dont have a case if you account were on margin so lawyers just will be there for your money for the fees, there is no way you can win a lawsuit against the broker on this one

    • Carl schmits says:

      Adrian,

While I love being called an idiot, my experience was not from trading on margin. I made a trade. It hit big. Later when checking the account, the 2 million was missing. That was not trading in margin. Also, the trade was erased from my history. But I had screen shots. They refuse to respond to my issue.
      Sincerely,
      Idiot

    • Kyle says:

Hi Carl, I have just opened my account with TD on Oct 2nd. I would like to make sure that this game wouldn’t be played in my backyard as I’m looking to hit it big 2014. What has happened between you and TD since then?

    • Marilyn says:

I HAD A HORRIBLE DAY DUE TO THINKORSWIM; THEY HAD A TECH GLITCH AND WOULD NOT MAKE GOOD ON MY LOSS..CALL ME BECAUSE I WOULD LOVE TO START A CLASS ACTION SUIT

      678 903-2223

      OR EMAIL ME AT iSAFEGUARD@AOL.COM

      • Class action lawsuits need to prove that the company intentionally violated the law, so before we can file a class action we need to identify the specific law (or FINRA Rule) that they violated, and prove that they knew they were violating the law but did it anyway.

If you feel that they should have made good on your losses resulting from a system error, that’s more of a customer service issue, and the only way to get them to improve their customer service is to tell your story on every complaint board you can think of, including and especially on their Facebook page.

  6. Linda Tepper says:

If I accidentally close the tdameritrade window, I cannot log in again because it says I have not logged out! What a stupid routine! I cannot get into my accounts again without deleting my history browser, which I don’t want to do! Has anyone discovered a way to bypass this ridiculous login/logout requirement?

  7. Faisal UAE says:

I am a foreign individual from Dubai, UAE. Had a long term investment in SANM through ameritrade for almost 8 years which I check from time to time. As the stocks rised in 2013 I checked my account and was surprised to see my account had been liquidated in late 2012 by ameritrade and without notice! Their response is my country is not in list of countries they want to do business with. Sure, but since when a broker decides when to pull out my investment? Luckily I am not near retirement age but I wish I could sue them.

  8. STANLEY FRIEDMAN says:

I LOST $5735 LAST YEAR WITH AMERTRADE’S THINK OR SWIM. THEY FED ME ERRONEOUS INFORMATION, BLOCKED TRADES, AND WOULD NOT LET ME HAVE THE OPTION OF HAVING THEM CLOSE OUT THE CONTRACT AT A HIGHER NUMBER THAN I WOULD BE ABLE TO.
THINK OR SWIM LED ME TO BELIEVE THAT I WAS BEING FED REAL TIME INFORMATION, INSTED THE DATA THAT I RECEIVED WAS 45 SECONDS BEHIND REAL TIME. IF I WOULD HAVE KNOWN THAT AT THE TIME, I WOULD NEVER HAVE GOTTEN INVOLVED IN THIS ROTTEN MESS.

I AM A 72 YEAR OLD DISABLED VET WITH PTSD AND THER STRESS OVER THIS LOSS IS KILLING ME AS I USED FUNDS THE VA PAID ME FOR MY DISABILITY.

  9. Instead of working against these Bleep-Bleeps separately, we have to start talking to one another and working against them in concert.

And with this now very serious Occupy Wall Street movement gaining strength, I think NOW is the perfect time to do it. (No, I am not a Left-winger. I am a lifelong Centrist Republican, as pro-business as they come, and both a former corporate director of investor relations and former regional vice president of NIRI, as well as an Ivy League-educated Ph.D.)

Ameritrade – which thinks it is Above the Law because it is CNBC’s largest advertiser – is operating like an Asylum in the Hands of Its Inmates.

If THEY are made to act like moral, decent, fair and just human beings towards their customers, instead of treating us like cockroaches, I think it would start the necessary healing process our World Markets have to go through, if they are to emerge from a period of not only great chaos, but great immorality – and what is very close to psychopathology.

Please read my blog from last year: Capital Punishment -Markets Through the Looking Glass
    http://marketslookingglass.wordpress.com/2010/05/25/1-my-life-versus-mrs-blankfeins-diamond-earrings/

I stopped this blog, already very popular, upon the death of my beloved elderly father last summer, but I am starting it up again momentarily.

I think everyone who comes to this site will empathize immediately with what I have gone through – and what apparently thousands – perhaps millions – of other retail and institutional investors alike have suffered at the hands of Da Boyz the past few decades.

But we need to start banding together and working together.

We need a subgroup of Occupy Wall Street for well-educated and sophisticated investors who were bleeped by the Master Baiters of the Universe because we were too smart or too competent and therefore had to be “punished” as an example to others.
